OEM stands for “Original Equipment Manufacturer”. OEM software contains the same program as the Retail Box version. They however do not come in fancy packaging materials as their retail counterparts, and there is no technical support provided by the software manufacturer, hence the lower prices for OEM versions.
Some software manufacturers/copyright holders require that hardware be purchased with their OEM products or to be distributed with New PC. Our company does not have affiliations or agreements with any of these manufacturers/copyright holders. The End User License Agreement is a contract between the user of the software/hardware item and the manufacturer/copyright holder of the software or hardware product. By purchasing OEM items from our company, you have agreed to comply with all of the terms of the End User License Agreement and have purchased or intend to purchase the qualifying hardware or items required, and you hold our company harmless for any damages or violations of this agreement.
DSP stands for “Delivery Service Partner”. DSP software is similar to OEM software, but DSP is more generic and normally would have no manufacturer’s name stamped on the manual or printed on the license. Like OEM versions, DSP versions contain the same program as the Retail Box version. They also do not come in fancy packaging materials and there is no technical support provided by the software manufacturer resulting in much lower prices. DSP versions often come with only an electronic help manual, which is built-in to the software or a small getting-started manual.
Some software manufacturers/copyright holders require that hardware be purchased with their OEM or DSP products or to be distributed with New PC.
NFR stands for “Not For Resale”. Purchasers are asked not to resell the package. These are generally not eligible for upgrades and may not include tech support. This software version is the same in function and packaging as the retail software of the same version.
CAL stands for “Client Access License”. These grant the right for a computer to have access to the server. (This is different than an operating system or workstation license which grants you the right to have an operating system running on your system.)
COA stands for Certificate of Authenticity. It's a document or hologram that is difficult to copy and confirms that the product is genuine.
Software produced for sale to students and qualified educational institutions only.
No CD or floppy disks are included. These are generally for volume client access items.
An update a revision to a software by means of patches and is like going from Windows 98 to Windows 98 SE (second edition). An upgrade takes you from one version to another such as from Windows 95 to Windows 98.
It is an upgrade for users of competing products from other manufacturers. It usually also allows upgrades from previous versions of the same product.
Instead of the colorful packaging used in retail sales, some software vendors package the software product in plain (white or brown) box when selling and shipping directly to customers. The product is identical in contents and licensing as the retail packages.
